Aruba Travel Blog

Aruba BeachSuitcases are still strewn across the floor, I’ve been wearing my Aruba souvenir sweatshirt for three days straight, and my face is what some would call tan and others would call blotchy. But at this point sharing little nuggets from the trip that got me in this condition before they fade into the foggy distance takes precedence over getting my life back in order. 5 days in Aruba. An island just under 70 square miles in area (that’s 1/3 the size of Tucson, Arizona!) with just over 100 thousand residents. It’s not your typical tropical island. Well, first of all, because it’s not tropical at all. It’s arid, semi-barren, and full of surprising contrasts.

Here are 10 of my random observations about Aruba:

DSC03367

1. EVERYONE is a polyglot. The two “official” languages are Dutch and Papiamento (sounds kindof like Portuguese in the same way that turkey kindof tastes like rattlesnake). Ben and I were never quite sure whether we should speak to people in English or Spanish and ended up being somewhat sporadic about it—not once did someone fail to understand us. Feeling a bit inferior here... how much was Rosetta Stone again?

rocky beach Aruba2. On one side of the island you get white sands and serene aquamarine waters, on the other side you have a tempestuous fusion of frothy midnight blue waves crashing into the rocky terrain in violent succession.

Kitesurfing in Aruba3. What’s pretty much guaranteed (at least at this time of year) is a strong & consistent windflow. PERFECT for kitesurfing, which is well on its way to becoming our next boarding obsession. We ended up at Armando’s Kite Shack on Palm Beach and signed up for 3 fun and incredibly thorough hands-on lessons. I’d almost say trying kitesurfing is a must for Aruba visitors.

Amazing Arcade: Dreamland in Aruba4. It’s home to the craziest arcade in America: Dream Land at Palm Beach Plaza in Noord. It’s separated into two areas, one geared toward kids, and the other more toward adults (all geared toward Ben, truth be told). We could NOT believe the level of insanity. I’m talking car-sized candy gambling machines, multi-player tetris with enormous joysticks, even a punch-a-prize game where you could win an ipod, a mac, or a gopro ($25 dollars in we realized it’s not as easy as it looks). Not to mention every blank vs. blank street-fighter hybrid and spinoff known to mankind. I am 99% positive that a large majority of those games exist only in Japan.

Hub Cafe in Aruba5. Hidden gem coffee spot: THE HUB. As my mid morning slump was hitting on day two (appropriately, at around 5:30PM) we were asking around for coffee. When somebody said “inside the arcade” I thought we’d find a 7/11-style coffee dispenser, but to my surprise we uncovered a full-blown exquisitely styled café with a plethora of delicious treats (that mocha though). From that moment on it became our go-to spot for sweet-craving satisfaction. On the last day Ben asked if the owner was a graphic designer (based on a hanging rack of magazines) and he turned out to be there. An all-around great dude with incredible vision and good taste, and a wife that, among many other things, makes one mean brownie.

Tesoro escondido: El café THE HUB.

Smart Rent Jeep Rental in Aruba6. Smart Rent, the car rental company DOES, in fact, exist. Stoked as I was about the great deal I’d scored on it (less than $100 a day), I was beginning to doubt my intuition and wise decision-making-skills when I booked the Jeep rental online a couple of weeks ago and the “confirmation link” lead to nowhere, I couldn’t find an official-looking site, reviews were practically impossible to come by, and nobody answered the “If you have any questions, please contact us” telephone number. As we exited the airport, I was surprised and relieved to find a jolly old man holding a sign with my name on it, eager to drive us to the lot. They were super laid back about everything and incredibly helpful with giving us an inkling of what to do on the island. I’m talking a marked up map and detailed instructions on how to get places and where to off-road.

Speaking of which, off-roading was EPIC. A conclusion I came to while barreling down the road:

“Freedom is having the AC on, AND the windows rolled down.” Boom.

Fresh lobster ceviche Aruba7. Fresh seafood abounds. We ventured outside of the recommended restaurants on the map and were not disappointed. One of our favorite places ended up being The West Deck in Oranjestad, the capital. We were driving around on the first day in our airport-induced stupor, and Ben happened to see it just as we realized we were too starving to cope. They ended up having fantastic ceviche and lobster salad, and mmm those fish fingers were out of this world. If I do recall correctly, Ben’s actual words after sampling them were: “That’s the best thing I’ve tasted… like ever.”

Balashi, the Official Beer of Aruba

8. Trust in God, but guard your stuff. This brings me to a shady situation that went down as we distractedly devoured our morsels. A family pulled up and parked right next to our Jeep, where we had left both suitcases and my backpack. A young boy got out and stood between the Jeep and the car and began “changing”. Ben, being from Mexico City, and having ever a keen eye for all things fishy, told me that something seemed off with them. When he walked down to the car to get more cash, they nervously began asking him questions that only a local would know (we later found out that our license plate had the tell-tale tourist sign on it, the initial letter V that is reserved strictly for rental cars). Shortly after that, they peeled out of the lot. When I got back in the car I realized that not only had they opened my backpack, they had actually taken out my little purse that was inside of it along with 2 books! They were just sitting there on the floor! Luckily, my camera was with me, and my wallet, cellphone and passport in the front pocket hadn’t been discovered yet. Sneaky little punks!

¡Caaaaaanijos!

Friendly donkeys in Aruba9. Friendliest donkeys EVER. Seriously. We drove past some that were so cute, we instinctively made a U-turn and rolled down the window, only to find ourselves being ambushed by several large, friendly and highly expectant donkey snouts. What do donkeys want in life, BTDubs? Because I’d like to give it to them.

Best sunset ever10. RIDICULOUS sunstes. Like Arizona status. (Now would be a good time to tell you how obsessed I am with Arizona sunsets). But make sure you’re on the West side of the island (Near Noord or Oranjestad should be a good start). We had heard that there were great sunsets at Baby Beach, but saw our star sink under the waterline with nary a color. The ones we did catch, though, had us jumping for joy.

Las puestas de sol son ridículas. Tipo Arizona.

Vancouver travel blog

snowcapped mountains and pine trees It’s true. People in Canada are friendlier, more polite, just generally more curious than people in the U.S. Yeah, yeah, they say you should never generalize, especially when you are grouping a specific bunch of people together based on their race or geographic location. So sue me. If it weren't for that one guy that flipped me off for not letting him in when the lanes were narrowing (how was i supposed to know?), I truly would have thought something was fishy.

Vancouver seems like the kind of city you could get comfortable living in, while still being constantly stimulated. Quirky shops and kooky cafés balance out sleek cityscapes, cozy hotels and hip restaurants. Locals, tourists, and soon-to-be residents all mesh together to create an eclectic mix of people that somehow all seem to be incredibly chill. And chilly it is, as you would imagine, but somehow knowing it was Canada made that less of a problem and more of an adventure. Yes, I just called putting on 7 layers of clothing an adventure.

Renting a mini van with GPS and snow wheels (who even knew those existed?) was one of our 239 best decisions during the whole trip (what can I say, I like to follow my own advice) It comfortably carried us (Ben and myself, and 3 of our friends from LA) around Vancouver and up to the impeccably magical impossibly frigid land of Whistler. Taking our GoPro camera was another one. Actually charging it on the second day turned out to be the cherry on top.

Our weekend was filled with things like reconnecting with friends (and family!), roaming around the city just to feel it breathe, soaking in the sights while listening to music, snowboarding and skiing down open and closed runs, eating really well, laughing, and not sleeping. The building blocks of a perfect mini-vacation.

playeras de güerita y morenaza #Throwback to a fun idea turned project turned full-blown-photoshoot. I was sitting on the breathtaking beach of Cancun with my friend Vania savoring a shrimp coctail and thinking about how cute it would be to create some t-shirts with two of the most common Spanish-language nicknames. If you're not a "güerita" ("blondie" or "whitie") you're a "morenaza" ("bronzed beauty" or "darkie"), and if you're somewhere in the middle (or you just don't cayurrr like me) you can pull off both. I ended up making the words out of real magazine cut-outs, I then took a picture of them on white paper, imported them into photoshop, and used those as designs for screen-printing (I had that part done professionally). As you can see, I wanted a pinky, girly theme for the photoshoot that also showcased the variety of looks you can create with the pieces. My friend Nelly served as makeup artist, hair-stylist, and model. It really was loads of fun! I just put a few more shirts up at my ETSY shop if you'd like to own one :D

P.S. After browsing through these pictures I have decided to go back to my natural blonde color ASAP. SO much easier to maintain! (OK the copious amounts of breakage I've been experiencing lately may also be a factor!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hagamos un pequeño #flashback a una idea que se convirtió en proyecto que se convirtió en sesión de fotos. Todo empezó en Cancun; estaba al lado del mar saboreándome un coctel de camarones con mi amiga Vania, y se nos ocurrió que sería lindo hacer camisetas con dos de los apodos más conocidos del idioma español. Si no eres una "güerita", eres una "morenaza". O si estás en algún punto intermedio (o si de plano estás loca, como yo), puedes portar ambos apodos. Hice las palabras con recortes reales de revista, de ahí las fotografié sobre un papel blanco para importar al Photoshop, y utilicé estas imágenes como diseños para hacer cerigrafía (esta parte se la dejé a un profesional). Como puedes ver, quise irme con un tema muy cuki donde el color rosa fuera muy prominente, y mi amiga Nelly la hizo de maquillista, estilista, y modelo. ¡Cómo nos divertimos! Acabo de subir unas playeras a mi tienda de ETSY, por si te gustaría tener una ;)
P.D. Después de ver estas fotos he decidido que ya es tiempo de regresar a mi color de cabello natural lo más pronto posible. ¡Mil veces más fácil de mantener! (Bueno, quizá la cantidad espantosa de cabellos quebrados que he tenido últimamente tenga algo que ver)
LA travel blog
Airplane wing shot with clouds Los Angeles just might be the closest thing to home for me. Not that I really know what "home" means.
To sum up my childhood: we bounced around from city to city, spending 1 to 4 years in each place. The progression went something like Tucson-Puebla-Tucson-Orizaba-Tucson-Oaxaca-Orizaba. So for me, thinking outside the box happened in the form of staying inside of a box of some sort. And Los Angeles had just enough to keep my gypsy-nomad tendencies at bay for 12 entire years.
Arriving in LA as a visitor is a new experience for me. I almost didn't know what to do with myself. It's like I wanted to run around, go everywhere, do everything and visit everyone. But at the same time I was just as happy basking in the perfect sunlight, reflecting and appreciating, pondering and planning. It turns out I hadn't actually idealized LA in my absence. It just rules.
I'll let my pictures do the rest of the talking for me... If my math doesn't fail me, these pictures are worth more than 38,000 words!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Beatles of Houston

Houston Beatles Statues What to do on a sweltering Saturday in soon-to-be-September? Head out on a mini-excursion to feast our eyes on elongated editions of The Beatles, of course! It’s crazy that these 36-foot-dudes have been practically living in our backyard this whole time and we’d never heard about them before! John, Paul, Ringo and George can be found in a semi-abandoned lot near the former studio of the great artist and sculptor David Adickes, along with an ever-changing collection of president heads and busts he’s created throughout the years. Yes, it’s technically private property—but visitors are welcome to mosey and meander between Lincoln, Roosevelt, Clinton and (a rather small-headed) Obama. Ah, art. Bold, bizarre, beautiful art. Our day continued with seafood and drinks at local tremendously trendy hidden gem Julep (‘hidden’ as in hidden from us, not from the rest of Houston, apparently!) where I learned that oysters can in fact be tolerable, and was gently reminded that, indeed, I still haven’t developed an affinity for bourbon.

~~~~~~~~~
¿Qué se puede hacer en un sábado soleado a semanas de septiembre? Salir de mini-excursión para conocer a los Beatles de concreto, ¡por supuesto! Lo más loco es que estas estatuas de 11 metros han estado viviendo prácticamente en mi jardín todo este tiempo, ¡y yo ni en cuenta! Puedes encontrar a John, Paul, Ringo y George en un lote semi-abandonado cerca de lo que solía ser el estudio del escultor y artista David Adickes. Conviviendo con ellos están docenas de cabezas y bustos de presidentes que ha creado a lo largo de los años y están en constante rotación. A pesar de que que es propiedad privada, puedes sentirte con la libertad de divagar y deambular entre Lincoln, Roosevelt, Clinton y Obama (Un Obama singularmente no cabezón). Los Beatles entre cabezas de presidentes, ¿Quién lo iba a pensar? Y es que así es el arte. Atrevido, absurdo, y hermoso. Nuestras aventuras continuaron en Julep, un bar escondido pero muy al día donde consumimos cantidades razonables de mariscos y cocteles. Allí aprendí que los ostiones pueden llegar a ser tolerables, y recordé que sigo sin desarrollar una afinidad por el whisky americano.
Lo que extrañaré de Los Angeles!
DSC_0325
I try to avoid becoming a part of the "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" statistic by avidly and actively appreciating the moment, my surroundings and my current situation. With that said, it certainly is true that leaving a place gives you a great excuse to celebrate all the things you love(d) about it.
And that, my friends is how I am breaking it to you that the time to say "goodbye LA" has come for me.
I will undoubtedly miss the coffee dates with the girlfriends, the spontaneous jaunts to the beach, admiring the skyline and taking a deep breath after hiking up Runyon Canyon, the oh-so-colorful-people-watching in Venice, heck, I'll even miss Orange County (kind-of). But I am 100% ready to embrace the great unknown that is Houston.
But before I begin exploring the fourth-largest city in the United States, I'd like to pause and pay a visual homage to the city that was my home for the last 12 years.
Wow. That's the longest I've lived anywhere.
Thank you, Los Angeles! I know that by the time I come back both you and I will have changed. And I hope it's for the better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Playing dress-up

DSC_2730 To me, dressing up for no particular reason at all is the ultimate celebration of being a woman. I say, why wait for “just the right occasion” to wear that fancy dress you’ve been itching to don, or those incredible stilettos that have been calling your name or that eccentric hat you bought while you were on vacation? The right occasion presents itself the moment you are in the mood for it to do so.

And that’s how I felt today. No need to justify or explain the white long flowy lacy dress, I wore it just for the heck-of-it, and it felt great!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Para mi, arreglarme y endomingarme cuando no tengo una razón en particular es una de las mejores maneras de celebrar que soy mujer. Asi como lo veo yo, ¿Para que esperar que sea “la ocasión perfecta” para ponerte ese vestido fancy que llama tu nombre desde el clóset, o esos tacones increíbles que tienes tantas ganas tienes de estrenar, o ese sombrero eccéntrico que te compraste cuando estabas de vacaciones? La ocasión perfecta se presenta el momento en el que tu quieras.
Y asi me sentí hoy. Sin la necesidad de justificar o explicar mi vestido de hada. Me lo puse porque se me antojó, y sabes que? Me encantó!
Image No me gusta el favoritismo, y aunque a todas las prendas en mi clóset les tengo cierto cariño, tengo que decirlo: estos shorts son de mis preferidos.
No conozco otra pieza que le inyecte vida a un atuendo sin querer llevarse el show entero. A pesar de que sobresalen (Gracias a la textura de tapete y la combinación de colores), saben complementar perfectamente. Y me llueven tantas preguntas acerca de donde las conseguí que quisiera tener algo un poco mas interesante o exótico que decir (Oaxaca? Chiapas? Morocco? Tailandia? Ya me fui...!) que “Melrose”. Ahora que lo recuerdo, las compré hace mas de 2 años ya... Tengo que regresar para ver si esa tiendita todavía existe!
There is definitely a special place in my heart for all my clothes, and I’m not big on favoritism. With that said, I must admit: these have got to be my favorite shorts. I don’t know of another piece that injects zest into an outfit without wanting to steal the entire show. Despite the fact that they stand out (thanks to their rug-like texture and bold colors), they somehow manage to know how to complement perfectly. I get asked where I got them so often that I wish I had something more interesting or exotic to say (Oaxaca? Chiapas? Morocco? Thailand? Ok, that was out there!) than “Melrose”. Come to think of it, I haven’t been back to that store since the day I bought these over 2 years ago... Gotta go back to see if the place still exists!
