Hand-me-downs formed an integral part of my childhood. Being the youngest of 5 with two older sisters gave me ample opportunities to score some twice-broken-in attire. The best was when my cousin Rachel would clean out her closet. Oh, getting those kitchen-sized white garbage bags filled to the brim was like Christmas for me. I’ll never forget that feeling. Pulling out entire matching outfits, trying on über cool jackets, running my hands along the softest of culottes, unable to imagine how profoundly having these clothes would impact my life. Wondering how in the WORLD she could be done with these already, and how was I lucky enough to be on the receiving end of it all?
It’s safe to say I haven’t received hand-me-downs in a while. So it was a pleasant surprise when my sweet suegra pulled these two suede gems that she used to rock in the 70’s out of her closet and told me they were mine to keep. It didn’t take much persuading.

La ropa de segunda mano formó una parte integral de mi niñez. Siendo la menor de 5 con 2 hermanas mayores, tuve muchas oportunidades para lucir prendas que ya habían sido amadas anteriormente. Lo mejor era cuando mi prima Rachel limpiaba su clóset. Recibir una de esas bolsas jumbo de cocina llenas hasta el tope era como la navidad para mi. Nunca olvidaré ese sentimiento. Metiendo la mano y sacando trajecitos perfectamente coordinados, apreciando la textura de shorts veraniegos, probándome chamarras de ensueño, y sintiendo de alguna manera que tener esta ropa definitivamente iba a cambiar mi vida, sin poderme imaginar cómo. Preguntándome cómo podía ser tan generosa y soltarme su ropa así nomás…
Cabe decir que ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que alguien me ofrece ropa que ya no va a usar. Así que fue una sorpresa grata cuando mi suegra sacó estas dos faldas de gamusa que ella usaba en los 70’s y me dijo que me las podía llevar (tan linda, ella). No le costó trabajo convencerme.
